Emily is a series of prototypical designs.

Developed by ATI Architects and Engineers, all of these designs have been taken through the DSA review process and granted pre-checked (PC) status. This allows your projects to achieve an accelerated review and approval when using Emily designs.

California High Performance School Standards (CHPS) and LEED design elements have been incorporated into the base design making Emily easily adaptable to District’s educational specifications and green initiatives.

Emily designs are not modular or portable construction – they are bid and built by the local general contracting community. The designs are available in single story, back-to-back, and two story configurations.

Valued engineered through hundreds and hundreds of applications, Emily designs are at the forefront of cost containment during construction.

Emily… a design for the future.

A Few Stories About Emily

Emily Classrooms and Campuses in Northern and Southern California

EMILY SUSTAINABILITY

Emily™ buildings utilize both passive and active energy conservation technologies as well as the most current thinking in sustainable design. The process includes optimization of design choices through physical and computer modeling. These projects typically incorporate the following features that make it eligible for a LEED or CHPS program certification:

VENTILATION

All windows are operable and promote cross-ventilation with ‘Energy Star’ rated equipment that delivers 640 cfm of fresh air provides mechanical ventilation.

CLASSROOM LAYOUT

The interior space is designed so that the principal visual tasks are positioned to reduce glare and provide proper illumination while the ceiling and wall finishes enhance the acoustic environment.

LIGHTING

Wall and clerestory windows on single story designs provide natural daylight in the classroom with pendant mounted indirect/direct lighting supplementing the natural lighting. Occupancy sensors respond to available daylight and the presence of occupants in the room which along with the ceiling and above wall finishes become an integral part of the lighting system.

Additionally, ATI reviews with its clients the cost benefit evaluations of additional criteria including alternative transportation strategies, waste reduction strategies, and sustainable materials.

Emily™ base designs incorporate approximately 50% of the required standards for CHPS or LEED certification and based on client direction, the designs are easily augmented to achieve CHPS or LEED certification.

In addition, Emily™ roofing systems are prepped for installation of photovoltaic panels which have become part of total campus solutions implemented by companies such as SunPower, Solar City, and Chevron Energy Solutions.

21st CENTURY LEARNING ENVIRONMENT

Classrooms of the 21st Century are the coming together of technology and curriculum in an environment that fosters learning in a formal and informal way. Emily™ designs are centered around the STEM, STEAM, Linked Learning, and Academy based programs and as such incorporate the following:

  • General orientation of room and the purpose for the classroom
  • Collaboration between teachers and students
  • Teacher’s desk location, projected image location(s), and speaker location
  • Flexibility of the furnishings
  • Location of the equipment and controls for the AV backbone, lighting, tube skylights, and blinds
  • Types of peripherals to be supported: Teacher & guest computers, peripherals such as document camera & other AV equipment
  • Sound amplification, speakers, and assisted listening systems (ALS)
  • Type of ports & needed connectivity

  • Projector types: Short throw vs. Standard
  • Smart Board vs. Projection Screen (manual, powered), White Board
  • Power for system and peripherals
  • IDF/Data infrastructure
  • Wireless/WIFI
  • Daylighting and scene lighting
  • Support for student laptops/tablets
  • Furniture type, placement, and integrated wire management

What People Are Saying About Emily

Robert Pierce, Assistant Superintendent,“We selected ATI to develop the District’s standard for new classrooms throughout the District. Our District was the first in the State of California to construct new classrooms using ATI’s EMILY design and we are currently in the second round of design for new classrooms at 13 campuses…. We have found ATI to be an extremely service oriented firm. They demonstrate a strong commitment to meeting defined scopes, budgets and schedules. They are creative Architects and Engineers in providing solutions to complex technical problems.”

Dr. Pat Jaurequi, Superintendent“By using the Emily pre-approved designs with some modifications, New Haven was able to speed up the construction process, which allowed us to go from concept to open school in ten months. All of the staff at ATI were a pleasure to work with, and we hope to add more Emily buildings to our sites in the future.”

Enrique E. Palacios“The opening of Martin Luther King, Jr., Junior High School represents a significant achievement for our district and our architect ATI Architects and Engineers. Using their prototypical preapproved (DSA) Emily designs we were able to expedite the DSA approval process and develop an accelerated construction schedule which allowed for our 800 student campus to open within one year after ATI was hired without using any modular or portable construction.”

Enrique E. Palacios
Deputy Superintendent

Christopher Grimes“Our District engaged ATI to complete the redesign of a major reconstruction project at Adelante High School in an effort to control project costs and expedite construction. This process followed an earlier design from another firm that exceeded budget constraints. Our goal was to utilize the Emily building design due to the DSA PC status of the buildings. At this time the building construction is well underway and has moved well with the Construction Administration support of ATI… I have found all staff at ATI to be willing and able to assist the District. On occasion this has required them to work weekends to meet schedule. ATI staff have been willing to “burn the midnight oil” to get the projects to success.”
